This unique passive solar cabin is built upon a large granite boulder, serving as both a rear foundation wall and interior thermal mass for passive heating and cooling. In the winter the sun angle is low, providing direct sun to strike the interior exposed boulder, warm the boulder, and produce radiant heating. In the summer the sun angle is high, with shade covering all the southern glass and interior boulder, thereby cooling the boulder, and providing passive cooling. A wood stove is backed up against the boulder supplementing the thermal mass heating effect.
